Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Highlands
Edinburgh to the shores of Loch Ness by way of Glencoe's glacier-carved peaks, with time on the water and a whisky stop in the Trossachs.
Walled gardens, the birthplace of the Saltire, a famous watermill and a clifftop castle on a day along the East Lothian coast with Drive Me Wild Scotland.
East Lothian is only a short drive from Edinburgh, yet it feels like another world of golden beaches, quiet villages and ruined fortresses by the sea. This day tour follows the scenic coastal road east, visiting a walled garden, the village where Scotland’s flag was born, a beautifully preserved 18th-century mill and the dramatic Tantallon Castle. We keep vehicles small and the pace relaxed, so there is time to explore rather than rush. Your driver-guide shares the stories behind each stop, from Pictish legend to the Douglas clan and its wars.
Morning: Edinburgh to Archerfield Walled Garden
We leave Edinburgh and follow East Lothian’s scenic coastal road. On the way we pass the seaside towns of Aberlady and Gullane, known for their golf courses and views across the Firth of Forth. Our first stop is Archerfield Walled Garden, with its tended gardens, café, shop and food market. Families can enjoy the woodland fairy trail and play area.
Mid-morning: Athelstaneford and Preston Mill
A short stop at Athelstaneford, the birthplace of the Scottish flag, tells the legend of the battle between the Picts and the Angles, the vision of King Angus and the origin of the Saltire. We then visit Preston Mill, an 18th-century watermill beside a quiet millpond, famous for its red-tiled roof and external waterwheel. It is one of the most photographed heritage sites in the region, and Outlander fans will recognise it from the show.
Afternoon: North Berwick and Tantallon Castle
Next is North Berwick, a former royal burgh with a pretty high street and sandy beaches. You have free time for lunch at a local café, or you can visit the Scottish Seabird Centre to learn about the area’s marine life and seabirds. We then drive to Tantallon Castle, a 14th-century fortress on cliffs above the North Sea and the seat of the Douglas clan. Explore the ruins and learn about its role in the Wars of Independence and other conflicts.
Evening: Back to Edinburgh
We return to Edinburgh by the coast road. [5:00PM]

Our driver-guide was exceptional! Travelling in a small executive group meant we could pull in at secluded Highland viewpoints the big 50-seater coaches couldn't reach. The local folklore through Glencoe made Scotland truly come alive.
A truly five-star experience from start to finish. The pace was relaxed and unhurried with ample time for photographs, lochside walks, and an authentic village lunch. Drive Me Wild Scotland exceeded every expectation!
First time exploring Scotland, and this tour made the whole trip unforgettable. Having an authentic Scottish driver-guide sharing personal stories and deep clan history made every mile fascinating. Spotless Mercedes mini-coach!
The scenery was breathtaking, and the small group atmosphere felt so welcoming. Our driver knew exactly where to stop for panoramic photos away from the crowds and gave great recommendations for the rest of our holiday.
